What Famous People Have Learned About Love

Fame can buy some rather lovely things.

Beautiful houses. Excellent tables at impossible restaurants. A car waiting downstairs. Possibly an entire team of people whose job is to make sure nobody ever has to wonder where the charger went.

Love, unfortunately, remains unimpressed.

It still manages to confuse, delight, frighten and occasionally humble people with considerably better access to private jets than the rest of us.

Which may be why some of the loveliest things famous people have said about love sound surprisingly familiar.

Falling for Someone

George Clooney

“It’s a humbling thing when you find someone to love. Even better if you’ve been waiting your whole life.”

Rather inconvenient for cynicism.

Ariana Grande

“Love is a really scary thing and you never know what's going to happen. It's one of the most beautiful things in life, but it's one of the most terrifying.”

A rather accurate description of something we continue volunteering for anyway.

Taylor Swift

“There are no rules when it comes to love. I just try to let love surprise me because you never know who you’re going to fall in love with.”

Which is probably just as well. Love has never shown much respect for carefully prepared lists.

What Love Should Feel Like

Michelle Obama

“Good relationships feel good. They feel right. They don’t hurt. They’re not painful.”

Some thoughts are better left exactly as they are.

Jennifer Lopez

“You have to be okay on your own before you can have a healthy relationship with another person.”

Not nearly as romantic as being rescued on horseback, admittedly, but considerably more useful.

Kim Kardashian

“It’s fun to have a partner who understands your life and lets you be you.”

There is something rather lovely about love making room for you instead of asking you to rearrange yourself to fit inside it.

Beyoncé

“If you're with the right person, it brings out the best version of you.”

Not a different woman. Not a more convenient woman. You, with a little more of yourself showing.

What Love Becomes When It Lasts

John Lennon

“We’ve got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can’t just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it’s going to get on by itself. You’ve got to keep on watering it. You’ve got to really look after it and nurture it.”

So even love, it seems, objects to being placed on a shelf and admired from across the room.

Queen Elizabeth II

“He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know.”

After all the talk of surprise, fear, independence and becoming your best self, perhaps this is where love eventually becomes quieter.

Someone stays.

Someone becomes part of your life so completely that the grand declarations matter less than the years themselves.

And after listening to all these very different people describe love, fame does not seem to have produced a secret formula after all.

We still want remarkably ordinary things: to feel good beside someone, to remain ourselves, to be loved without being diminished, to become a little better in each other’s company and, if we are very lucky, to have someone still standing there years later.

Private jets remain optional.
